A two day international orienteering event

SALONIKA OPEN

26  and 27th March 2016. Greece, Thessaloniki,

History, culture, eating out, dancing and orienteering

Two days full of exciting races, traditional Greek dancing, kayaking, winter swimming, stretching orienteeringexercises, sightseeing, shopping in the famous Mediterranean Cosmos complex etc. learning about the Greek debt crisis. Upon request we could organize a Greek dancing evening in one of the tavernas.

Preliminary programme:

Thursday, March 24th

Arrival, registration, accommodation. Visit to Epanomi village for walking at the beach and eating out. Kayaking upon request.

Friday, March 25th

National Celebration of Independence Day. The most significant day of the Greek calendar. You could watch the school children’s parade at the sea front or we could organize a walk around the ancient city walls and a trip to a mountain village nearby for a meal. Full historical and sociological analysis of the Greek Independence day (1821) as well as the current financial crisis. Handouts will be delivered regarding the evolution of the Greek debt. Alternatively, we could walk around the city ancient walls and Acropolis in the morning. In the evening walking in Perea and Neoi Epivates.

Saturday, March 26th

11.00 a.m. Livadi Open, long and middle distance. Black and white map.

Location: Livadi village, The traditional village has 263 residents. Relax and eat in the beautiful square. Free transport for the first five foreign visitors who would like to take part in the event. Car hire possible for the rest of the international competitors. Because the altitude of the summit is nearly 1000 m. a weather prediction is essential. In case of poor weather there are other options for orienteering.

Sunday, March 27th

11.00 a.m. Kedrinos lofos forest near Fillipeion Hotel. Open, long, middle and sprint distance. Coloured map. Free transport for the first five foreign visitors who would like to take part in the event.

17.00 p.m. Sprint orienteering in the streets of the upper city of Thessaloniki. Cafe Aithrio, opposite the Eptapyrgion museum. Score event. One hour running.

Monday March 28th

10.30 a.m. Free drive to the airport for five people who are staying in Peraia suburb or in the hotels around the airport.

 

ORGANIZERS: Greek Orienteering club of Thessaloniki

EVENT  DIRECTOR: Konstantinos Koukouris.

CLASSES: As similar to IOF Rules as possible given the limitations of the maps. Si punching system might be in use! Otherwise we will rely on the manual system.

MAPS: Coloured map the second day, black and white  map the first day.

ACCOMODATION: Various comfortable hotels with very good rates in Thessaloniki, Peraia or Chalkidiki. Possible longer stay prior or after the event!
